One highly underutilized thing you can do is market yourself.
How do you do that in an age where self-promotion is not allowed in most groups?
What do you do to make you stand out?
Let’s start with my LinkedIn friend Erik Davidek who came up with this (and a few more) gems on his job search.
(Thanks Erik for allowing me to post your image!)
What happened to him?
He secured a new job within 2.5 weeks of his layoff.
Talk about a limited time offer.
In his words: “While short, my laidoff journey was intense:
-Tons of networking meetings
-Dozens of interviews
-Multiple job offers from stellar companies”
Two and a half weeks was all it took…due to fantastic marketing of himself. How could he do that when self promotion isn’t allowed? By knowing two things:
1. What he had to offer
2. Where it was ok to self promote.
Go to www.photopea.com if you don't have an image editor better than MSPaint.
I'm going to assume you know how to use the basics of an image editor here, but create yourself a nice simple background. Feel free to copy his style - it's your picture and words and contact info that is most important anyway!
Step 5: After that, choose 5 of your biggest, coolest skills from your skills list to put underneath.
See the headshot with "Sales and Marketing chops?!" That's genius - because it directly said what job he wants. Want to be a mechanic? "Comes with tools and repair skills?!" How about a store manager? "Scheduling mastery and sales skills?"
Select New Project, and then your choice of size - but for this the Instagram size is good. Press the Create button
That Tagline! You might not want to put Year End Closeout (as Erik made this in November), but a cool tagline such as "On Sale Now" or "Now Available in Yourstate/Yourcity!"
Other "smaller taglines" ideas: "Quantity limited and going fast" "What everyone wants in their workplace" "The hottest product of the year"
Find a good picture of yourself - any picture. Full body, head shot, anything you like! If you notice - Erik was standing next to someone else while holding the puppy - another person's shirt is barely in view, around his arm. Don't be concerned with the perfect picture. You don't need to hold a pet - but if you do happen to have something you'd like to pose with - go for it! It shows your personality.
Nah. The steps above are just ideas.
This is an example of how to stand out of the crowd.
Standing out of the crowd is terrifying and that’s why it’s so important to do nowadays – because normal people are terrified. That’s why stand-outters get hired!
I want you to create your own stand-outter style for the job you want. Get loud, post lots of responses to people’s posts, state you’re looking for employment frequently, and improve what skills you can when you get ideas of what to improve!
There’s plenty of places!
1. Your Linkedin profile.
2. Linkedin groups you’ve joined for the field you wish to be in.
3. Facebook groups for getting jobs (there’s soooo many!)
4. Print this out and take it to networking and career events. Wear it on you if you wish. Stand out from the crowd of job seekers!
5. Send it with your resume as a cover letter.
Be quite memorable in a funny or happy way. No need to flash dressy, impress with knowledge, hide behind a mask of intelligence…just have fun with the concept of job hunting. Never fade into the background when you’re in a job hunt. Never go with the crowd. Standing out used to be dangerous but today it’s necessary because it’s so rarely done.
Even those that believe they are standing out from the crowd – are just adding noise within it. Go bolder!
Interviewing can be daunting, but not if you have a few tips going in. For example – don’t think about your interview as little man/woman against big company (David and Goliath) – think of yourself as….well, go have a read – it’s part of your free CAMP bonuses!
You’ll learn a few tactics in the Skills Call. But this amazing “Guerilla Marketing on Linkedin” guide was written by JT at PracticallyUncommon.com! He has given me permission to host and have it as part of the CAMP course. It’s hard work…but you’ll have a job so much faster after using even some of his techniques!
The Ikigai course helps you determine what dream job you should target – getting you on the path to the job that fulfills you!
Ikigai means “Finding your life’s purpose” in Japanese.
(pronounced ee-key-guy)
The Skills Analyzer course, gave your resume a complete makeover with a skills-based approach, allowing you to see your skills and use them to jump ladders.
Ikigai is the next step up: It’s not just about finding a better job, but a job you LOVE. With the same skills and experiences you have right now.
Finding one’s Ikigai eludes most people, but I’ve broken it down into a simple-to-follow 5-module course that makes it actionable and achievable.
* The Ikigai Program is designed for those who have already tried their hand at a variety of experiences, so is not recommended if you are below the age of 25.
The Ikigai program includes 2x 1:1 calls:
By the end of Call #1, you will find your calling and purpose main categories.
By the end of Call #2, we will choose a clear Ikigai job, and target your brain, and resume, for it.
Don’t worry – you’re not left on your own here either. You’ll again have me on speed dial (well, speed text).
I’ll be there until you get a job that’s one step closer to your Ikigai (after that you’ll probably be too busy having fun with your work to need me anyway!)
